This 1-hour asynchronous course is designed for medical interpreters and translators who work with patients with diabetes. Depending on the type of diabetes and the patient’s medical insurance, treatment regimens vary and can include, pills, insulin, GLP-1 injectables, and other medications to control weight and blood sugar. This session will guide language professionals through the terminology and communication challenges associated with prediabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.

Medical interpreters and translators often interpret for patients affected by prediabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.

• Recognize different types of diabetes
• Identify medical supplies needed for diabetes management
• Outline common oral, injectable, and subcutaneous treatment regimens for different types of diabetes.

• Differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes
• Common lab tests used to monitor and detect diabetes
• Types of insulin: rapid-acting, long-acting, premixed, etc.
• Modern treatments for blood glucose management: CGMs, insulin pumps, GLP-1s
• Standard treatment, testing, and complications associated with gestational diabetes
