What's Inlcuded

What’s Included

Beyond facilitating communication, what contributions do healthcare interpreters make to patient care, provider workflow, and healthcare delivery? This 1-hour ethics-focused session introduces the research questions behind The Hidden Roles of Healthcare Interpreters (2026), a mixed-methods study of interpreters, healthcare providers, and Spanish-speaking patients, and focuses on the first of those questions.

Participants will examine what each group reported about the work interpreters perform beyond language interpretation, including cultural mediation, advocacy, scheduling, logistical guidance, and emotional support. The session compares how often interpreters report performing these tasks with what providers observe and what patients describe, and considers how interpreters themselves view their contribution to patient outcomes.

Each finding is analyzed through the lens of the NCIHC National Code of Ethics and National Standards of Practice. Participants will consider where these activities align with ethical principles such as cultural awareness and advocacy, where they test the boundaries of the interpreter’s role, and how professional judgment guides interpreters in encounters that standards do not fully anticipate.
